Geothermal Boreholes

M5. Geothermal Boreholes, Loop Quality and Loop Test Certificate

You should ensure that the ground source loops used for your installation are of good quality, simply because they must function without fault for the lifetime of your Ground Source Heat Pump installation, this could easily be for 20 or 30 years.

Make sure that your loops are made of PE100 material (Not PE80). Ask about the quality and guarantees, if at all possible watch the loops being installed. Make sure that the U bend at the bottom or foot of the loop is of high quality and has been securely welded.

As with many other things, you get what you pay for. Cheap installations will use cheap loops with inferior reliability.

We purchase ground source loops which are, we believe, the best quality obtainable. They are manufactured to IGSHPA standards from PE100 material conforming to DIN8074/5 and come from the supplier having been individually pressure tested to a rating of16 Bar and certificated. This means that they are one of the more expensive loops on the market. We are however, committed to delivering the highest quality of installation, not necessarily the cheapest.

Each borehole loop that we insert will be tested again by us on site. There are two tests for each loop.

1) A flow test which demonstrates adequate flow of fluid through the loop. This is to ensure that there are no restrictive kinks or blockages in the inserted loop.

2) A pressure test. This simply demonstrates that the inserted loop is free from leakage, even at high pressure.

You will get a test confirmation in the form of a test certificate as shown below
